Spare Any Change?

The world is full of night walkers
People who breathe better when the air's thicker
The sky's darkness folds over their feet like a slipper
They walk while others sleep
Everyone's dreaming
I walk at night by choice.
You see, I consider those times to be the morning
Thankfully,
I haven't yet experienced a morning where my head is supported by gum-littered concrete
I haven't yet experienced a morning where I wake to dying neighbour
or feel the gaze of distain as day walkers grab their morning coffee
Invest
Build!
We say that will really move the needle
But the needle is dirty
Rusty
Professional "Power People" are obviously delirious...
It's not a choice
I hoped that we would have learned by now
Everyone knows you can't just "try harder"
You see
Nobody chooses the life we live
Random chance is more closely correlated to our outcomes than
Hard work
Or "smart" decisions
Nobody decides to live in unbearable emotional pain
To have unspeakable trauma inflicted on them when they were learning how to tie their shoes, or when
we are attempting to figuring out the difference between
Knot
AND
Not
We all want to dream
Of a life that feels beautiful
And have days sandwiched between purpose and service
Life will end
Let's stop trying to thread the needle
To patch black holes
Instead, we must fight back
With the gravity of infinite compassion
You see,
I've had to remember
You can't buy love
You can't quantify trauma
So stop,
Please
Please
Please
Please
Please
Just pause for a moment
When you're on your morning walk
Just stop
And smile
And say "Hello, how are you?"
You see, in a thousand worlds, that could have been either you or me
We are all equally human
And to pity
is to spit on one's dreams
Let's help each other find common comforts on calming clouds
And a hand to hold while the sun goes down
We should all feel safe in the dark
We should all have someone to call
We should all have cupboards to fill
A place to write
And a blanket to warm the night
Be the change.
Night walkers...
